In 1920, Claude Barnes was enumerated in the household of his parents, Pat H. and Mamie Barnes.[1]  Linnie T. is living nearby with her parents.[2]

According to her death certificate, Linnie was born near Birdsville, Kentucky and was the daughter of Gus Henry, who was born at Birdsville, and Myrtle Harris, born in Hopkins County, Kentucky. [3] She died of tuberculosis. 

After Linnie's death, Claude went to Detroit, where he worked as a die setter and was a lodger, along with James A. Barnes and Margaret Barnes, on Baker Street. [4]   On 10 May 1941, Claude married Emma Hargis Elkins in Henry County, Ohio. He was listed as born in Kentucky, lived Detroit and was a widower.[5]

Claude H. Barnes  died in Paducah at the age of 70 years. According to his obituary, he was survived by a sister and a brother. Services were held at Smith Funeral Home Chapel and burial was in Ferguson Cemetery, near Smithland. He was a member of Wolverine Masonic Lodge No. 484 F&AM in Detroit.[6]

This intriguing tombstone can be found in Smithland Cemetery, Smithland, Kentucky. It was photographed 6 February 2013.

A little more of the tombstone was visible when Livingston County, Kentucky Cemeteries 1738 - 1976 was published in 1977 by the Livingston County Homemaker Clubs. On page 334 of this book it states as follows: "Smith, Lovenia R., consort of Abner, 9 Nov  ..."  The rest was below ground.  That was enough, however, to learn a bit about Luvenia/Lovenia and Abner Smith.

On 22 September 1841, Abner Smith married Lavinia Smith. Her father, W.B. Smith gave consent for the license to be issued.[1]  The 1850 Livingston County census shows Abner Smith, age 38; Leovinia Smith, age 36 and Drucilla Smith, age 2. All were listed as having been born in Tennessee. This may be an error, especially for Drucilla.

Drucilla Smith, age 4 years and 20 days, died of cholera on 21 August 1853.[2] Her parents were listed as Abner and Luvenia R. Smith. 

No death record for Luvenia Smith was found, but she must have died between when the census was taken in 1850 and when Abner married Elizabeth Harris on 11 August 1852.[3] Sometime before 1860, Abner Smith moved his family to Catahoula County, Louisiana. He was listed as a ship carpenter on that census.  Left behind were the graves of his first wife, Luvenia, and their child, Drucilla.

Kentucky death certificate #1928 shows that Thomas H. Harris was born in Illinois and was the son of James Harris and Sabra [sic] Medcalf. He died at the age of 34 and his usual residence was in Gilbertsville, Kentucky.

James Harris and Sarah Metcalf, parents of Thomas Harris, married in Pope County, Illinois 29 May 1887.

On the 1920 Livingston County census, Harris was living in Smithland Precinct with T. Robert Smith and Ann Smith. Harris is listed as their nephew.

Affidavit Regarding Heirs of Wylie Jones 1848

Little jewels of information can be found in many Caldwell County, Kentucky records.  The following gem can be found in  Caldwell County Order Book G, pages 276 and is dated  Monday, 15 May 1848. Wouldn't you love to find an item like this on your family?

"The affidavit of Mary J. Blick affiant being of lawful age and first duly sworn says that she has been for 40 years passed acquainted with Wylie Jones now here in open Court, that she Knew him when he lived in Brunswick County Virginia, that he married Sarah C. Ogburn daughter of Benjamin Ogburn of said County Now deceased, that he has been residing in Caldwell and Crittenden Counties in this State for about 14 years past, that he has two daughters who are now residing in this County one of whom Agness Sarah Harris is the wife of Mr. Frederick N. Harris, the other Mary J. Jones, is 18 years of age and that they are the children of Wylie Jones by his wife Sarah C. Ogburn formerly and the only children living which sd. Sarah had. She further states that she is the sister of Wylie Jones, was raised in Virginia and has been in this state for about 14 years past. Also the affidavit of Pleasant Conway, who being duly sworn says that he has Known Wylie Jones since Wylie was a boy, Knew him in Virginia in Dunwoodie[?] County, Knew that he married in Brunswick County and always understood hs wifes maiden name was Sarah C. Ogburn, [knew] her well after she was married, Knew that they removed to the County about 14 or 10 years past  his wife Sarah C. died in this County about 12 years since leaving two daughters Sarah Agness now married to Frederick N. Harris and Mary J. Jones yet Single and about 18 years of age which are the only children sd. Sarah had which are now living  Affiant has been well acquainted with Jones and wife up to her death since his boyhood and can make the above statement with certainty."
