Joseph H. and Elvira Thompson are buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Caldwell County, Kentucky. This tombstone was photographed 10 December 2018.

Joseph H. Thompson and Elvira Cooksey were married 19 January 1892 in Caldwell County. [1] In 1918, Joseph H. and Elvira Thompson were living at 407 S. 19th Street, Paducah, Kentucky.[2]

According to her death certificate, Elvira Thompson died in Hopkinsville. The  names and birthplaces of her parents were not listed.[3] Her obituary states she was survived by her husband, one daughter, two sons, a sister and two brothers.

Joseph Henry Thompson was a carpenter by trade and was the son of Henry Thompson and Martha Crafton, both of whom were born in Kentucky. He died in Paducah.

Jane Kirk and her children appear on the 1850 Caldwell County census.[1] As the youngest child was born ca 1840 in Ireland, it appears the family left Ireland after that year and traveled to America.  There is no mention of Jane's husband, David Kirk.

Jane Kirk, daughter of David and Jane Kirk,  died 3 July 1858 in Caldwell County and is also buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery. [2] In 1860, David Kirk Jr. and his sister, Nancy Kirk, and brother Alexander Kirk, are living together in Princeton. [3]

David Kirk, son of David and Jane Kirk, married Sarah Jane Guess 6 September 1860 in Caldwell County. On the marriage bond he listed his parents as David Kirk and Jane Henry.[4] Was she related to Joseph Henry, who is also buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery?  Nancy Kirk married John Garrett 16 November 1864.[5]  Alexander Kirk married Miss Bettie J. Maxwell 19 January 1870. On the marriage bond he listed his occupation as a merchant and was living in Leavenworth, Kansas.[6]

George M. Lowey and Melissa B. Smith married 10 June 1883 Caldwell County.[1]  On the marriage bond, George M. Lowey stated he was 26, a grocer and was born in North Carolina and lived in Princeton, Kentucky. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother was born in Kentucky. Melissa Smith  was 15 years old when she married and was a resident of Princeton.  Mattie Smith, mother of the bride, gave written consent for the marriage license to be issued.

George M. and Lizzie Lowey were enumerated on the 1900 Caldwell County census.  Living in their household were children, James S., Clara, Margaret and George, plus George's mother in law, Mattie Smith.[2]

According to her death certificate, [3] Melissa Lowey was born in Logan County, Kentucky, was the widow of Geo. M. Lowey. Her parents were Alonzo Smith, born Boston, Massachusetts , and Martha Williams, born Virginia.

Thomas Hunter married Miss Lucy Ann Rochester 23 February 1834 in Caldwell County. Her father, Nathaniel Rochester, gave permission for a marriage license to be issued.[1]  Shortly following the death of his wife, Thomas Hunter married Jane R. Crabb in Garrard County, Kentucky. [2]

An announcement of Thomas Hunter's death appeared in the 4 September 1894 issue of the Hopkinsville Kentuckian:    "Hunter - Mr. Thomas Hunter, the oldest citizen of Princeton, died on the 27 [sic] ult. He was 84 years old."[3]

The Rev. William C. McGehee and Miss Mary H. Dudley were married 22 August 1853 by S.N. Davis, Cumberland Presbyterian minister, at the home of M. Dudley. The bridegroom was born in Louisa County, Virginia and his bride was born in Princeton. [1]

The McGehee family was living in Todd County, Kentucky in 1860[2] and, by 1870, they were living in Princeton again.[3]  The Rev. McGehee wrote his will on the same day he died and it was recorded 16 December 1873.[4] He mentioned his wife, Mary H. McGehee, and "our children," but does not name them.

By 1900, Mary H. McGehee had moved to Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.[5] Ten years later she was living in the home of her daughter, Annie McGehee Dooley, in Knoxville.[6]

According to Death Certificate #5214, Mary H. McGehee was the daughter of Milton B. Dudley and Eliza Harpending and was born in Kentucky.[7]

According to his death certificate,[1] James McGregor was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky and was the son of John McGregor, born South Carolina, and Polly Franklin, born Kentucky. Informant on the death certificate was L.H. McGregor.

Maranda McGregor was also born in Hopkins County and was the daughter of David Franklin and Diadema Jackson, both of whom were born in Hopkins County.[2]

James McGregor married Marand_ Franklin 18 Sep 1853 Hopkins County.

Frank A. Pasteur and Clemmie Lander married 14 November 1877 at the Christian Church in Princeton. [1]Pasteur was age 32, born Tennessee, current Caldwell County Court Clerk and his parents were born in Georgia. Clemmie Lander was age 22, born Christian County, Kentucky and her parents were born in Christian County.

Frank A. Pasteur served as clerk of the Caldwell County Clerk for 27 years until he was defeated by 43 votes by R.L. Gresham in late 1901.[2] Pasteur also served in Co. K, 10th Regt., KY Cavalry (Johnson's) during the Civil War.[3]

Frank A. Pasteur died suddenly at his home in Princeton of heart disease on 1 June 1902. Survivors included his wife, Clemmie, and three children.[4]

According to Kentucky death certificate #29078 (1039), Mrs. Hodge was born Aug. 22, 1869 in Trigg County to Robert Roach and Virginia White.  She was married to S.D. Hodge.  Mrs. Hodge died Dec. 7, 1939 in Caldwell County, Kentucky.


UPDATE - Mr. S.D. Hodge and Miss Maude M. Roach married the 18th day of October 1905 in Trigg County, Kentucky.  Hodge was age 37, born in Crittenden County, Kentucky and lived in Princeton. He was an attorney and this was his second marriage. His parents were S. Hodge (born  in Livingston County, KY) and Kitty D. Hodge (born Crittenden County).  Maude M. Roach was age 37, born and resided in Trigg County and this was her first marriage. Her parents were R.W. Roach and Virginia Roach, both born in Trigg County.  When Hodge obtained the marriage bond on 17 October 1905, Wylie Jones was his surety.  This record can be found in Caldwell County Marriage Book 22, page 562.

William B. Young was granted Letters of Administration upon the estate of John L. Young deceased  on Monday, 17 October 1836.  Thomas Prince, William Wadlington and Joseph W. Fowler were security on the bond William B. Young signed to guarantee faithful performance of his duties as administrator. F.W. Urey, Howard Cassidy, John Pack and John J. Satterfield, or any three of them, were appointed to appraise the decedent's estate.[1]

Among the items  sold from the estate of John L. Young were books, including a "History of England" and "U. States Constitution" and "6 Vol. Encyclopedia."  Several slaves were among the inventory:  Negro man Ned, Negro girl Marthy, Negro woman Vilot, child named Sally, boy named  James.[2]

William H. Duke married Miss Mary E. Wigginton 3 September 1863 in Caldwell County.

The last appearance of William H. and Mary E. Duke together on a census was on the 1880 Caldwell County census in Enumerator District 158. William H. Duke was the enumerator in that district. Listed in the household were Wm. H. Duke, age 38; M.E. Duke, age 37, and their daughter, Charlie, age 18.

After William H. Duke's death, his widow continued to live in Princeton. In 1900 she lived on North Jefferson  Street. Included in her household were her daughter and son-in-law, Charlie and Edward D. Barnett, and their son, Edward.  They moved to the Bronx, New York before 1920 and are found in Bronx Assembly District 5, that year.

J.P. Green and his family are enumerated on the 1870 and 1880 Trigg County, Kentucky census records. He is then found on the 1890 Caldwell County tax list in Princeton.

Joseph W. McGowan and Miss Sally Ann Wood married 26 July 1855 at the residence of the bride's father in Caldwell County. Giving consent for his daughter, Sally Ann, to marry was James Wood. Joseph and Sarah McGowan and their children are enumerated on the 1880 Caldwell County census. Also living in their household is Sally Ann's mother, Sally Wood.  According to death certificate #27080 (1912), Sally Ann was born 14 May 1838 Caldwell County and died 11 November 1912. Her parents were J.B. Wood, born Virginia, and Sarah Curry, born Paris, Kentucky.

According to his obituary in the obituary files of Glenn E. Martin Genealogy Library, Henry. Timberlake Maret was born in Paris, France. He came to America with his parents when he was a child and later became a naturalized citizen. His death certificate lists his father's name as Lewis Maret.

The 1900 Caldwell County census shows William O. Pickering, druggist, living in Princeton with his wife Eddy [sic] and children Herman and Catherine. Eddie Pickering and children Herman, Catherine, Lucile and William O. were still living in Princeton on the 1910 Caldwell County census, but by 1920, the family had moved to Chicago.

 

The Illinois Deaths and Stillborns Index 1916-1947 on Ancestry.com shows that Ned [sic] Pickering was born in Mississippi and died in Chicago. Burial was in Princeton, Kentucky. Her parents were Wm. Thacker, born Coffee County, Tennessee, and Jenny Maul, born Kentucky.

Tombstones photographed 18 March 2011.  The stone for Mary Barnes is more primitive and common for this area of Kentucky during the 1830s and 1840s while Richard Barnes' tombstone illustrates how the styles had evolved during the 30 plus years between their deaths.

 

On the 19th of October 1812, Richard Barnes was bound to Jacob Houts in Livingston County to learn the tanner's trade, Richard "being 15 years old the 17th day of September last." [County Court Order Book E:148]

 

Richard Barnes and Polly Wiley married 23 July 1818 in Livingston County, Kentucky. Richard Barnes and his family are found living in Princeton in 1820 and thereafter.

Larkin Sisk is enumerated on the 1840 - 1850 and 1870 Caldwell County census records. The 1850 census shows that he was age 54, born in South Carolina. Milly was age 49 and born in Tennessee. Larkin is found on the 1860 Crittenden County census (west half of the county) in the household of Alfred Turner. He appears on the 1870 Caldwell County census in the household of Henry Sisk.

According to his Kentucky death certificate, William Marble, a lawyer, was born in Marion, Crittenden County, Kentucky and died 3 February 1920 McCracken County, Kentucky. His father was listed as Sumner Marble.

In 1895, William Marble and his wife, Anna H. Marble, applied for a passport to go abroad. He gave his birth date as 8 September 1848 and his physical description as 5 feet 4 inches tall, brown hair, blue gray eyes and fair complexion. His passport application is found under Passport Applications 1795-1905 on Ancestry.com
