Elizabeth Lake Dunn was a daughter of David Andrew Dunn and his first wife, Addie Haynes, citizens of Smithland. Elizabeth's father was a sheriff of Livingston County and organized Smithland's first bank, the Livingston County Bank. He was president of that bank and of Smithland Bank, which he also organized.[1]

Elizabeth was living in Smithland with her father, step-mother and eight siblings in 1920.[2] At that time Elizabeth had completed four years of high school.  By the time of the 1940 census, Elizabeth was living in Frankfort, Kentucky and was a clerk doing government work.[3]

Miss Elizabeth Dunn was age 92 when she died in 1978. Survivors included two brothers and four sisters and several nephews and nieces. She was a life member of Smithland Methodist Church.[4]

Buried in Smithland Cemetery, Livingston County, Kentucky. Tombstone photographed 11 Oct 2017. Note the Masonic symbol and the "Handshake of Matrimony" engraved on the tombstone.

Jesse Olive, the son of Richard Olive and Evaline Rutter, married Barbara Ann Gray ca 1848/1849 and had the following children: Willie P., Bella, Leona and Jesse R. Olive.

In 1853, Jesse Olive was appointed postmaster in Salem.[1]  When his mother died in 1857[2], Jesse was named executor of her will.[3] By 1860, he was termed a "paralytic" and money was appropriated for the use of Jesse and his family.[4]

Jesse's widow, Barbara, married M.F. Dunn 20 December 1866 in Salem.[5]  This marriage ended in divorce in 1868.[6]

According to Kentucky death certificate #15262, David Andrew Dunn was born in Lyon County, Kentucky. His parents were Madison Dunn and Lucinda Bigham, both born Kentucky. 

 

The 1880 Livingston County census has Addie Haynes enumerated in the household of her parents, Emilius P. and Lizzie Haynes. The 1900 Livingston County census shows D.A. and Addie Haynes  Dunn had been married 17 years and had nine children.

 

D.A. Dunn married Miss Laura Champion 4 November 1906 in Smithland.

Tombstone Tuesday - Dunn & Pierce

Laura Champion and Rosa Duley were cousins and both were reared in the household of Dr. H.H. Duley.  According to Rosa's death certificate, she was born 2 May 1871 Kentucky and was the daughter of Henry H. Duley and Mary Handlin. She married John S. Pierce 22 January 1902 Livingston County. Rosa died 25 November 1929.

 

Laura Champion was born 14 April 1860 and died 6 February 1941, according to her death certificate. Her parents were listed as "unknown."  She and D.A. Dunn married 4 November 1906 at the home of Dr. H.H. Duley Sr. in Smithland. Her parents were listed as W.H.H. Champion and Emily Duley Champion on her marriage bond.

According to his obituary in the 11 December 1947 issue of the Livingston Leader, Marvin E. Scyster died in Fort Worth, Texas. "Mr. Scyster's father was a well known merchant in Smithland for many years and Mr. Scyster was connected with the Smithland Bank for a number of years before entering the insurance business in Paducah."

Mr. Scyster left Kentucky for Memphis, Tennessee and later moved to Oklahoma City and, finally, Fort Worth. At his death, survivors included his wife, Doris Dunn Scyster; sons Marvin Jr. of Memphis and George Dunn Scyster of Fort Worth; daughter Margaret Scyster of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter Sylvia Scyster of Memphis and nephew David Ellis Reeves of Washington, D.C.

Demolition of Dunn House

The top photo, dated April 2009, is of the Dunn House, built by the Grayot family about 1867, in Smithland, Kentucky. This home, which has stood empty for about 20 years, was demolished today, leaving one less landmark in this very old, historic town. The new Livingston County office building is to be built on this spot.

Wordless Wednesday - Dunn Home

Dunn Home, Court Street, Smithland, Kentucky. Built in 1867 by the Grayot family, the house takes its name from D.A. Dunn, who later owned it. This home is located next to the old Livingston County courthouse. Photograph dated April 2009.
