Tombstone Tuesday - Claud and Linnie Guess

Claud M. Guess registered for the military draft for World War I on 12 September 1918. At that time he listed his occupation as blacksmith. His nearest relative was his wife, Linnie, who lived at R. #1, Marion, Crittenden County. His physical description was as follows:  short, stout, gray eyes and light colored hair.[1]

The 1940 census shows Claud and Linnie Guess, plus two children, living in Shady Grove on Hwy Ky 120.[2]

According to his death certificate, Claud Malcomb Guess was born in Crittenden County to Fielding Guess and Rebecca Brantley, both of whom were also born in Crittenden County. His occupation was listed as a plumber.[3]

The death date of Linnie Guess is given as 5 December 1951 on her death certificate. She was a teacher in county schools. Her parents were William Ira Nunn and Mary A. Thurmond.[4]

James W. Brantley is enumerated in the household of Nathan and Angeline Brantley on the 1850 Crittenden County census. James W. Brantley was age 13 on the census and was not yet 21 when he died.

According to death certificate #2867, Susan Brantley was the daughter of John Tosh and Mary Jane Brantley, both of whom were born in Kentucky. She was born in Kentucky and died in Crittenden County. The informant on her death certificate was A.L. Brantley of Repton. 

L.D.  Brantley Jr. and Susan B. Tosh were married 29 March 1884 in Crittenden County. They last appeared together on a census in 1920 in Crittenden County.

According to his death certificate #25839, Patrick Cain Gilbert was born 30 April 1858 and died 24 September 1929. His parents were listed as Jno. M. Gilbert and Pernecie Brantley.  P.C. Cain married Mahala Fritts 8 January 1880 at the home of Rhoda Fritts in Crittenden County. It is curious that the wife of P.C. Cain is listed as Halie or Mahala on the marriage and census records as well as her death certificate, but is listed as Hattie on her tombstone.  Her death certificate shows her parents as Jack Fritts and Rhoda McCormack, both born in Tennessee. In 1920, P.C. and Mahala (Fritts) Cain were living on Fords Ferry Road, Crittenden County.
