Tombstone Tuesday - Claud and Linnie Guess

Claud M. Guess registered for the military draft for World War I on 12 September 1918. At that time he listed his occupation as blacksmith. His nearest relative was his wife, Linnie, who lived at R. #1, Marion, Crittenden County. His physical description was as follows:  short, stout, gray eyes and light colored hair.[1]

The 1940 census shows Claud and Linnie Guess, plus two children, living in Shady Grove on Hwy Ky 120.[2]

According to his death certificate, Claud Malcomb Guess was born in Crittenden County to Fielding Guess and Rebecca Brantley, both of whom were also born in Crittenden County. His occupation was listed as a plumber.[3]

The death date of Linnie Guess is given as 5 December 1951 on her death certificate. She was a teacher in county schools. Her parents were William Ira Nunn and Mary A. Thurmond.[4]

Tombstone Tuesday - Dolly Walker

George Ann Burton married Daniel B. Walker 12 April 1864 in Crittenden County.[1] They first appear together on the 1870 Crittenden County census with two young children, M.C. and H.D. Walker. [2] By 1920, Dolly Walker was living in Mississippi County, Missouri in the home of her son, John D. Walker.[3]

Dolly Walker's death notice states she was living in East Prairie, Missouri at the time of death. She was born and reared in  Crittenden County. Her two sons, John and Charlie Walker, accompanied her body back to Crittenden County for burial.[4]

According to her death certificate, Dolly Walker was born in Simpson County, Kentucky and was a widow at the time of her death.[5]  Her husband, Daniel Black Walker, was born 28 May 1839, died 31 August 1884 and is also buried at Repton Cemetery.[6]

The given name and birth and death dates for Marinda Shuttlesworth  on her death certificate do not agree with the inscription on her tombstone.  Her death certificate shows her name as Malinda Shuttlesworth;  she was born 4 August 1846 Henderson County, Kentucky and died 18 January 1916 Crittenden County. Her parents are listed as Alec Minten and -- Powell, both born in Henderson County.[1]

James A. Shuttlesworth married Miss Malinda Minton 23 March 1867 in Union County, Kentucky. Her given name is listed as Marinda Minton on the marriage return.[2]

James A. and Marinda Shuttlesworth and their children are listed on the 1880 Union County census in Morganfield.[3]

The 14 May 1896 issue of the Crittenden Press gives the following information on James A. Shuttlesworth's death:  "Mr. James A. Shuttlesworth, an aged citizen of the Repton neighborhood, died very suddenly Monday night. He had been in rather poor health for several years."

John W. Cook 1878 - 1921

John William Cook was the son of Joseph R. Cook and Caldonia Burton, both of whom were born in Crittenden County. [1] He is listed on the 1900 Crittenden County census with his wife, Ida M., and son, Eddie O. Cook. John W. and Ida M. Cook had been married two years.[2]

In 1917, John W. Cook applied for the military draft and gave the following information: He was born 1 November 1878; was employed by the Wasson Coal Co. in Wasson, Saline County, Illinois and his nearest relative was Ida Mae Cook.[3]

The death of John W. Cook was recorded as 29 May 1921 in Saline County, Illinois. He was a coal miner and his parents were given as Joe Cook and Callie Burton. [4]  According to his obituary, John W. Cook had lived at Wasson two years. He was injured at Wasson mines and suffered from "a nervous trouble" which soon paralyzed his whole body.  Survivors were his wife, son Homer and daughter, Sybil. The funeral was held in Crittenden County. [5]

According to Kentucky Death Certificate #24802, Rozella Augusta Gass was the daughter of Martin Gahagen and Margarette Cain. Rozella was listed as divorced.

The 1910 Crittenden County census shows Rozella as the wife of Thomas M. Gass and mother of J. Ray and Annie M. Gass. Also living in their household was her mother, Margaret T. Gahagen, who was listed as a widow.

According to Kentucky death certificate #1119, Mable Agnes Gibson Farley was born in Indiana in 1894 to Clint Gibson and an unknown mother and died 17 December 1924. Thomas Farley's death certificate #9053 shows that he was born 1 May 1879 Crittenden County and died 18 April 1940 Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky. His parents are given as Gatesfield D. Farley and Sarah Elizabeth Tabor, both born in Kentucky.

Rachal/Rachel Howerton was born 12 March 1856 Crittenden County and died 19 January 1934, according to her Kentucky death certificate #5846. Her birth record shows her birth as 12 March 1855 and her parents as John G. Nation and Rachel Shoemaker.

Richard Howerton's Kentucky death certificate #3219 shows he died 13 January 1925 at the age of 75 years. His parents are listed as Henry Howerton and Catherine Postlethweight.

According to his death certificate, James W. Bennett was born in Tennessee and was the son of Thomas J. Bennett and Martha Perkins. He was a blacksmith and died in Webster County, Kentucky.  His wife, Alice Emily Green, was the daughter of William and Susan Green and also died in Webster County. She was born in Crittenden County.

Thomas R. Simpson, born in Christian County, Kentucky, was the son of Alexander Simpson and Becka Gray, according to Thomas' death certificate #16803. He first married Louisa Lizinbee in 1857 and later married Mrs. Sarah Ann (Burton) Elliott in 1870.  Sarah, born 14 July 1832, was the daughter of Ben Burton and Manerva Thurmond. Her death certificate #14246  lists her death date as 19 March 1916.
