Flowers Mark the Graves in Wilson Cemetery

Margaret A.
Wife of
G.P. Wilson
Born
Mar. 14, 1836
Died
Apr. 11, 1906

Buried in the Wilson Family Cemetery, off Bells Mines Church Road, Crittenden County, Kentucky. The above tombstone was photographed 1 April 2013. Note the blooming daffodils.

Margaret A. Wilson's obituary tells a great deal about her life. She was "born in Livingston county, Ky., March 14, 1836; was married to Mr. George P. Wilson March 24, 1853, and died at their home near Weston, Ky., April 11, 1906.

"Sister Wilson professed religion when quite young and joined the Methodist church in 1853. She was of  cheerful disposition, and was an earnest, faithful worker in the church, and as a result of this faithful life many were induced to give up sin and turn to God.

"She leaves a husband, three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Two sons preceded her to the sun-bright clime above. Aunt Mag, as she was familiarly called, will be greatly missed. I preached her funeral at the residence where she had lived so long and we laid her away in the family cemetery near by, which she had already adorned with flowers, to await the resurrection at the last day."  [signed]  R.C. Love.[1]

The flowers in the cemetery planted by Margaret A. Wilson are still visible in the photograph above. We first located this cemetery in the early 1990s and several years later we used the flowers to guide us to the cemetery. The photograph below was made during a visit in the 1990s.

Tombstone Tuesday - Wilson Cemetery

I first visited this old cemetery in the Bells Mines area of Crittenden County in 1989 and re-visited it several times through the early 1990s. Recently I got a longing to go back to the cemetery and take photos of all the tombstones, something I neglected to do in previous visits. Did I remember how to get there? I knew it was not far down the road from Greens Chapel Cemetery, but how far?  My good friend, Brenda Travis Underdown, who writes Forgotten Passages Blog, and I decided we would try to find it.  We put our memories together and came up with this: We knew we had to cross a little creek and climb a hill and surely the daffodils planted around the tombstones could be seen from a distance. So, we planned a spring visit, using the daffodils as a focal point.  The first attempt was not successful, but yesterday it worked and the daffodils could be seen from a distance.

This cemetery is on land formerly owned by Jeremiah Wilson whose Burial was likely the first in the cemetery. Buried beside him is his wife, Dolly.

There are many more tombstones in this cemetery and we were fortunate to locate all of those recorded in the 1990s. For a complete list, refer to The Crittenden County Kentucky Cemeteries North Western Section, Volume III, published 2005 and available from the Crittenden County Genealogical Society.

Nearby is the tombstone of James E. Taylor. It was face down on the ground and perhaps had been toppled by a downed tree during a recent ice storm.

The following tombstone is interesting in that it is handcarved and is shaped somewhat like the sandstone tombstones of the 1830s and 1840s in the area.

Tombstone Tuesday - Jeremiah Wilson

There are two tombstones for Jeremiah Wilson, who died 7 June 1850 and is buried in the Wilson Family Cemetery, off Bells Mines Church Road in northern Crittenden County. The tombstone on the left is handcarved and has no dates. The tombstone on the right was professionally carved. This photo was taken 27 November 1989.

Jeremiah Wilson was born 1 December 1802 probably in Tennessee and came to what was then Livingston County at an early date.

Jeremiah Wilson married Dolly H. (surname possibly Taylor), who was born 11 September 1808, died 21 January 1892 and who is also buried in the Wilson Family Cemetery. They had the following children: Ruth Malvina, Nancy N., George P., Joseph E., William J., America Elizabeth and Margaret A.

Jeremiah owned land on the Tradewater River, Ohio River and on Camp Creek. In 1849, he gave one acre for a "baring ground and to build a church to be used for all denominations of Christians that believe in fundamental doctrine of Religion ..." Bells Mines Cumberland Presbyterian Church was built on this land.
