Hi Brenda,

According to my PAF relationship calculator, James F. Crowell and I are first cousins three times removed. Our common ancestor is Hezekiah Crowell. I did a little research after seeing this post and discovered that James F. Crowell experienced much loss in his short life. According to Find A Grave (Tosh Cemetery), his father, James L. Crowell, passed away on 28 September 1888, about eight months before James F. was born. James F. Crowell's mother passed away on 30 October 1891, leaving him an orphan at age 2. According to the 1900 U.S. Population Census, James F. Crowell and his sister were living in Carrsville, Livingston County, as the wards of William and Susan C. Hill. On 5 June 1917, five months before his tragic death, James F. Crowell registered for the draft. On his WWI registration card, he gave his occupation as a miner at the Rosiclare Lead Fluor Spar Mine.

Another interesting tidbit: James F. Crowell married Rudell Greer (daughter of James M. Greer and Tina A. Crowell) on 23 November 1915 (Kentucky Marriages, 1785-1979, familysearch). They were third cousins one time removed. This is not the first case of intermarriage among the western Kentucky Crowells. My gr-gr grandmother, Amanda J. Crowell (James F.'s aunt) was married to her first cousin, Josiah A. Crowell.
