It was recently announced that the Christian County, Kentucky Genealogical Society is disbanding effective 31 December 2011. The society was organized in 1978 and incorporated in 1983. Through the years, they published a number of books and held several seminars in Hopkinsville.
It is a sad day when societies disband, but I believe it is far better to go out in glory rather than tarry until there are too few members to be an effective force in the genealogical community. Without a doubt we will see more societies disband in the future.

I'm so sad to hear this. One of my New Year's resolutions is to join a few more "remote" (= not where I live) genealogical societies. I may not be able to help with attendance, but I can at least help with my membership dues.
I visited them after I was in Crittenden a couple of years ago. I would not have thought that group would die. Wonder what will happen to the records they maintained?
Cindy, their materials have been housed in the public library and it would seem reasonable they would continue to be there. I'll try to find out, though. It is sad when a group disbands, especially one of long standing. However, it is going to happen more and more as members age and younger people are not brought into the society.
I stopped by there to inquire about Mary Reese Hodge who probably died at the Lunatic Asylum. They had managed to compile some early records from the Asylum - nothing in them about Mary - and since those records are incredibly hard to find, I sure hope what they did have will be available somewhere. That reminds me that I need to get back on the project to get appointed Mary's & James' guardian so I can get hold of whatever records might be hiding at the archives.
