Tombstone Tuesday - John Flint

Sacred
to the Memory
of
Mr. John Flint
who was born Aug. 9th
1765
and died Feb. 5th
1817

Buried Hill Cemetery, off Hwy. 91, Caldwell County, Kentucky. Tombstone photographed 13 May 2011.

There were two men named John Flint who lived in the area at the same time, causing quite a bit of confusion. The above John Flint died first. The inventory of his estate is dated 5 Marcy 1817 with Hugh McVay, Wm. Ford Senr., and William Johnson as appraisers.[1]  The other John Flint left a very detailed will dated 23 November 1819. The appraisers of his estate were John Craig, Elijah Stevens and Tacy Cooper.[2]

Thank you for posting this great picture and inscription. I believe this was my 4th great-grandfather. I’ve seen a transcription of the Inventory but not the Will, following his 1817 death...am curious if it references Benjamin W. as heir?
Do you have any additional information about John’s place of birth, wife, children, father, etc.?

Best regards,
Eli Flint

The will of John Flint (Will Book A, page 333) lists his wife Elizabeth, friend Lewis C.K. Hamilton, children Thomas Flint, Jesse C Flint, Elizabeth Briant, Deborah, Margaret, Margaret, Hannah, William, John Flint, Visy, Terresay, Elisa. It is confusing as he mentions "the first seven" and then "the last four." The Caldwell County Historical Society has a transcription of the first Will book for sale. You might contact them for availability and price. Good luck.

THank you for the response and information, but that will is for the Irish-born John Flint, who died in 1819. It's confusing as both men lived in the vicinity of Skinframe Creek, Caldwell County. Researchers have been mixing the two for years.

This John Flint 1765-1817 was English or American born, but we don't know which and we have no marriage records either. He had a son (or other relative) Benjamin W. Flint who took over his land for taxes in 1817 following his death. This is clear in the Caldwell County tax lists 1816-1817. But we can't find a deed or will or administrative bond showing transfer and a potential relationship.

Ben W was my 3rd great-grandfather and well documented.
We know Benjamin was buying land in Caldwell County on his own in 1815.
The Probate records are available online I think?
Thanks again for any help.
